The best work starts before the first take.

Before the first call sheet, make space for a conversation about the story. What do you want the audience to feel? What does each person find interesting about the project? A shared sense of purpose helps a team make choices when the plan inevitably changes.

Make practical expectations explicit. Talk about roles, dates, working hours, compensation, credits, and how decisions will be made. Write down what you agree. A clear scope gives everyone more room to focus on the creative work.

Ask how people like to collaborate. Some think aloud; others need time with a draft. Some prefer a reference image; others respond to a scene description. Good teams learn one another’s working language.

Leave room for people to say what they need. A production is a collection of human beings, each bringing a different perspective. Make that a strength, from the first conversation to the final cut.
